Designer

Thomas Burberry was born in Surrey and trained as a draper before founding his Basingstoke outfitter in 1856. Rural practicality was the inspiration for his redefined outdoor wear, with waterlogged coats being replaced by breathable, weatherproof fabrics. His 1879 invention of gabardine – a waterproof yarn – completely revolutionised performance clothing, and it later aided Shackleton’s Antarctic expeditions. Burberry partnered with British mills to craft durable outerwear, including the iconic burberry coat men and timeless burberry jacket women pieces. This outerwear is now a staple for adventurers and the middle class, often worn alongside accessories such as the burberry cashmere scarf and casual burberry trainers for a signature city look. Today, sustainability drives innovation: the ReBurberry Fabric initiative upcycles deadstock, while mycelium leather research heralds eco-conscious luxury. Burberry committed to carbon neutrality by 2040. Burberry trench coats now use 100% traceable wool and recycled nylon, aligning with values behind burberry her and broader heritage lines. From a Victorian tailor’s shop to a global icon, Burberry is the living embodiment of Thomas’s creed — “True luxury lies in the relentless pursuit of function” — melding heritage with modernity. Holographic moors frame runway shows, as gabardine’s legacy continues to redefine luxury through innovation and extends across burberry shorts, footwear, shirting, and outerwear collections.
