Guide to Oxford: History

Oxford History

You are spoilt for choice if you wish to experience some of the history of Oxford:

·      Bodleian Library – The 5th oldest library in Europe and boasts over 14 million items including the Book of Curiosities, an 11th Century Egyptian manuscript which is the only one of its kind written by an unknown author which includes the earliest known world map with a grid in history

·      Christ Church College – Founded in the 1500s by Cardinal Wosley and reshaped later by King Henry VIII. Both a college still in use today and a cathedral. The Great Hall here inspired the dining hall in Hogwarts. The cathedral is home to 12 bells, the oldest of which was installed in 1589, the Bourden Bell (also known as Great Tom) was installed in 1680 and is famous for weighing over 6 tonnes

·      Ashmolean Museum – The first university museum in the world, dating back to 1683. The collection ranges from ancient Egyptian antiquities such as the Scorpion Macehead (an original depiction of the old Pharaoh engaged in ritual) to the largest collection of original Raphael drawings in the world, so there will always be something for everyone.
